Holbein

Hans Holbein the Younger

From: Totentanz (1538) [danse macabre]

XXXIII. The old men

Spiritus meus attenuabitur, dies mei breviabuntur, et solum mihi superest sepulchrum.
My breath is corrupt, my days are extinct, the graves are ready for me.
[Job 17:1]

[Death playing a xylophone directs the old men to an open grave. That does not pay attention where he goes, only listening to the music. On the wall of the graveyard stands an hour-glass.]
